Gambling Risks
While gambling is a socially accepted form of entertainment, it has serious risks. Problem gambling in young adults has been linked to substance use and psychiatric disorders. Gambling often begins during adolescence or young adulthood. The risks of gambling addiction are well-known, but there are also known risk factors for problematic gambling. Childhood maltreatment, delinquency, and substance use are all known risk factors for problem gambling.
Problem gamblers are more likely to engage in gambling activities to relax, escape, or alter their mood. In general, fast-paced, repetitive games accommodate these needs the best. Additionally, activities with high event frequency are most likely to attract problem gamblers. Therefore, problem gambling research focuses on safer products. Nevertheless, these findings are not definitive. For now, there are still many questions to be answered. Further research is necessary to better understand the risks of gambling in young people.
A recent large-scale project identified certain risk factors of gambling. One of these risk factors is the speed of play. Games that require a large number of bets within a short time period are considered higher risks. These games include slot machines and other fast-paced activities. Gambling is widespread, and with the increase in accessibility, it must be monitored. Gambling service providers should implement policies and programs to prevent problem gambling among underage people. Furthermore, researchers should encourage more research into the treatment and prevention of gambling addiction. In addition, self-tests are available to help identify and address problems before they develop into a serious addiction.
A literature review reveals that there is a growing concern among care professionals regarding the risks of gambling among adults with care needs. The findings of this research will help to improve the identification of vulnerable adults in gambling environments. The findings of the project will be presented at various international conferences in 2017.
Unregulated online gambling sites can prey on unsuspecting players. While they may seem legitimate, they’re not regulated, and players can be hard-pressed to find them when a problem arises. In addition, these unregulated sites often suffer from cybersecurity problems, leaving personal information vulnerable to hackers and scammers. In some cases, contact information is shared with third-party gambling partners. Ultimately, gambling is a form of entertainment for some, and a means of earning an income for others.
While women tend to be more likely to develop a gambling addiction than men, compulsive gambling is more common in women. Unlike men, women may start gambling later in life and become addicted to it more easily. However, gambling patterns between men and women have been becoming more similar. Other factors that contribute to the risk of developing a gambling addiction include family or friend influence and certain medications used for Parkinson’s disease and restless leg syndrome. Some personality traits, including compulsive gambling, also increase the risk.
